State College Sunrise Celebrates 10 Years
On Tuesday, June 14th, 2016 the State College Sunrise Rotary Club celebrated its 10th year Anniversary. A celebration dinner was held at the “Greek” restaurant in State College PA. Approximately 50 people enjoyed fellowship, great food and lively conversation. Club president, Art Leach, led the opening remarks along with comments and well wishes by District Governor Dave Ford and Past District Governor Jim Eberly.
PFG Carol Walsh and District Secretary Mary Johnson also reminisced about their involvement with getting the Sunrise Club off the ground and “struggled” to attend the early morning club meetings as they were not “morning people”.
Many smiles were seen and much laughter was heard during the evening. Club members and guests had time to mingle, tell many stories and placed bids on silent auction items for the benefit of the club’s fund raising program.
The State College Sunrise Club was chartered on June 14th of 2006 with 30 charter members. Today, the club has 30 members with several new members joining the club in the past year.
Highlights of the clubs past 10 years include several members taking part in a GSE team, sponsoring: 4 inbound and 4 outbound exchange students, an Interact club and RYLA students each year.
The club also is involved with community service projects such as Adopt-a-Road and book collections for the Philippines, Women’s Resource Center and Park Forest Pre-School. Other community service projects have included Camp Cadet, Santa’s Mailbox, supporting Centre Volunteers in Medicine, the Food Bank, Toys for Tots, Habitat for Humanity, Housing Transitions, the Salvation Army, Special Olympics and several others.
In 2013 the club also initiated a signature honorary program, the 4 Way Test Award. The club presents the award to 3 local emergency response volunteers to honor their exemplary service in the local community.
Each year, the State College Sunrise Club raises funds through food stands, hoagie sales, and other fund raising programs financial donations to several community non-profit and organizations in need, including: Discovery Space, Women’s Resource Center, Park Forest Preschool, Global Connections and many, many others.
The club looks forward to the next 10 years of “service above self” and continuing to provide fellowship and support to our club members and to serving our local and worldwide communities.
